Horatio's Review:
Sepultura's gradual success had seen them rise to Slayer-like proportions in the thrash world, a process which began with 1989's masterpiece 'Beneath The Remains', which indicated there was life outside of the big four in terms of heaviness and quality control.  It was a complete turnaround from the crude early albums, which were adequate but letdown by poor production.  Brazil's finest scored again with 1991's 'Arise', another thrash classic with one of the best drum sounds ever heard in the genre.  By 1993 the band had outgrown the confines of routine thrash, however, and 'Chaos A.D.' saw the band take their first steps in a slower, but no less heavier, direction.  In many ways this could almost be their most savage offering, as Max took on every social inhumanity known to mankind to a backdrop of musical violence.

1993 reminds me of a skinny freak wearing a long sleeved, oversized, black metal shirt with either Cannibal Corpse, Obituary, Metallica or Sepultura on the front.  This album catapulted Sepultura into the realms of metal heavyweights, also endearing them to legions of metal fans worldwide who perhaps in the preceeding years had pegged Sepultura unfairly as a death metal act.  'Chaos A.D.' upped the production values several notches which rid the band of a sometimes rough sound.  The diminishing of their past speed wasn't a bad thing either, as the riffs are some of the most brutal I've ever heard in the thrash catalogue.  Instead then of a relentless thrasher the band out of nowhere would pull a titanic riff out of nowhere, 'Nomad' a key example, the shredding riff at the 4:30 point, positively mind blowing. When the band opts for brief bursts of speed they are as devastating as ever, particularly the thrash segment during 'Clenched Fist' which is on par with Slayer for intensity.  Music of the gods it is.

The utter rage of 'Refuse/Resist', 'Territory', 'Slave New World', 'Manifest' and 'Biotech Is Godzilla' is almost without equal, a statement of one man's anger against his own country's political injustice.  'Propoganda' is a musical blow to the bollocks, tempered by the acoustic 'Kaiowas' which indicated the direction the band was heading.  The inclusion of a cover, The New Model Army's 'The Hunt' is dubious, but that's the only slip up.  For all purposes this masterpiece was the end of Sepultura's career.  'Roots' was devoid of melody and the band's trademark sound, Max ruining it with his downtuned fetish.  Since then the band has released only one worthy effort in 1998's 'Against' with Derrick Green.  'Chaos A.D.' was the last real Sepultura album, but a blast of heaviness that every Maori in the North Island is still headbanging to in 2005, oblivious to what year it is.  A rare example of the real deal.
