Shev's Review:
Hailing from New Hampshire, this is the debut album from the highly under appreciated Scissorfight.  Often compared to Clutch, these guys are actually worlds apart.  This is a slow to mid-paced sludgy stoner and swamp rock southern groove mix with some of the meanest vocals ever recorded.

Standing out strongest is the vocals of Ironlung.  Depending on the mood, he'll sing anywhere from clean to guttural with an amazing range in between.  Guitar and bass chug along, moving apart from each other and back again in the blink of an eye.  Working as the spine to the band, and seeming to rely less on the bass then most other bands, the drumming is top notch and not afraid to be kept simple for the sake of the song.  Anybody whose interests range from stoner rock, hardcore, metal, or southern groove needs to look into picking this up immediately.  Guaranteed Kill is a cornerstone in the Scissorfight legacy.

Song Summaries:

  1. American Cloven Hoof Blues - Good intro and a great way to start the album.  Good use on tempo and vocal stylings.  A
  2. Supervirgin vs. Death Machine - Picks up from American Cloven Hoof Blues.  Incredibly catchy and simple with a few complex scraps.  A-
  3. Helicopter Killing Cottonmouth - Creative, but a little repetitious.  Outstanding vocals, but it ends a little too quick.  C+
  4. Fine Me - I hate songs that start out with fast drums to set the mood for a mid-paced song.  Awesome free mess/stoner guitar solo, but forgettable overall.  C-
  5. Chocorua Mountain Woman - Great riffs, but the drums should have been a little more dominant.  B
  6. Moosilaukie Rot - Great vocals.  Guitar sound is too annoying to be enjoyable.  D
  7. 1893 - The vocals on this song are amazing.  Incredibly catchy and very to the point.  A
  8. Build More Prisons - Too sludgy for my tastes, especially for following up 1893, but it ends on a high note.  C
  9. Mulekick - Has a nice slow pace, but picks up to keep it interesting.  Piss poor intro, though.  B
  10. Tempest Of Skulls - Good driving music.  Wish it was a little faster.  B+
  11. Harvest Of Horror - Fitting sound effects and near perfect slo-groove.  A
  12. Joke - Nice upbeat change although a little too repetitious.  B-
  13. Planet Of Ass - Best song on the disc!  Classic, fast, and practically out of place on a release like this.  A+
  14. Mjolnir In The Valley Of The Hags - Strong finish to the album.  Slows down from Planet Of Ass, but faster than normal.  A-
