Shev's Review:
So you’ve worn out your Gorgasm records and want some new brutal death
metal? Preferably lacking in musicianship, song writing, and overall
integrity? Put that Mortician CD down, friend, we’ve found a new contender
to the highly over-rated genre of mindless brutal death…Saprogenic, hailing
from Michigan.
For those that prefer the one-dimensional vocals that scrape the bottom of
the ubiquitous guttural barrel, Jeremy Swanson has your fix! Sure, he may
show some diversity with a higher scream now and again, but for the most part he just shoves that mic right down the throat and belches out line after
line of indistinguishable crapola. God bless him (brutally, of course).
For those that like a terrible drum sound mixed with hyperfast blast beats
that drown out all the chugging strings, Jerrod MacPherson does a phenomenal job.
Regardless of his seemingly impressive display of talent, there’s just way too much brutal beating and not enough filling to make his
work even partially distinguishable. And for those that absolutely love tired,
watered down riffs and a chaotic whirlwind of low-end thunder, Tim and John really do a nice job of contributing what they can to make sure the
laughable production isn’t wasted on something that people might actually
want to hear.
In all honesty, Saprogenic aren’t as bad as I’ve already made them out to
be. There are some serious flaws like the above mentioned, but they do
show promise in some area’s. For instance, they do have a tendency
to lean towards some slower material, as well, making things just a hair more
interesting. For a band reveling in brutality, these are surprisingly the best
parts of the album. They also attempt to throw in a few small scraps of
thrash, but unfortunately these are quickly drowned out and forgotten with
their knack of just flailing their arms all over the place musically.
I’ll probably receive some hate mail for this review, but this is just another
soggy brutal dm band which is perfect for any mindless Mortician drone as
they don’t waste time with horror movie samples. Just straight to the point
emptiness with absolutely no finish. They do offer a couple of decent
songs, though, namely “Occular Desication” and “Remnants Of
Cephalotripsy”, but for the most part they’re completely out of control with
their speed. It’s a shame, really, as they do show a lot of promise as
musicians. We’ll see what their next full length has to offer, but in the
meantime there’s only one word that sums “The Wet Sound Of Flesh On
Concrete”…PPPBBBBTTTTTTT!
