Pissing Razors - Fields Of Disbelief

Quick Summary:
Things didn't look to good for the four from Texas.  Their guitarist (Matt Lynch) left the band to form his own (Wick-War-Burn) and instead they picked up the guitarist from Skinlab to take his place.  Would this mess up the bands southern style?  Hell no!  This album blows away the other two!  No kidding, this is by far their best release.  For myself, this creates instant anger that can only be achieved by:  a) A gentle ass kicking involving a 2X4 with a rusty nail, or; b) Witnessing a band come together to form music that, although incredibly simple, still rocks!

How did they create all this fun?  Well, Ceaser wrote most of the music on this album with Garcia.  The concept, let's rock more ass then ever before.  Keeping with their Pantera influences, Ceaser dropped his guitar to Bb, and Garcia improved his drumming skills even more by providing even more double bass and yet, more symbol bell hits.  He also works on his polyrythms, as well.  However, if that wasn't enough fun for y'all, try this out.  This album has some of the most confusing tempo and transition changes I have heard in a long time.  Two good example of this are "Fork Tongue" when the song starts out pretty fast, gets into it's main riffs, and then at 1:38, the tempo and guitar work takes a complete slowdown.  It's like driving a car at 55 and stopping real fast as to not hit Little Billy on his tricycle.  Your stomach stops, your body lurches, and a small trail of urine is left behind.  The other example comes from the song "Three".  I don't know how they did it, but they decided to play nine notes in a 8 beat measure.  That's right, nine in an eight beat measure.  It just blows my mind every time.  This might be the only other album besides Megadeth's Rust in Peace in which every riff could be its own song.  People wanting to get into the music industry listen to this and remember that it doesn't have to be difficult to kick ass.  With all this fun in one album it is hard to choose the best song.  If you are interested in this album, listen to the first 4 tracks and then track 7.  Or download them, whatever.

Song Summaries:

  1. Between Heaven And Hell - Like a bull out of the gate, it just bucks like hell!  Speed, aggression, fun.  A
  2. Fork Tongue - Hard as Hell!  Groovy with fairly good polyrythms and one hell of a transition at 1:38.  A
  3. Ruin - Kick my ass some more!  The double bass is good in this one and the change has the drummer going everywhere.  A
  4. You'll Never Know - Good fast intro, catchy head banging fun.  A
  5. Selfish - Screw this song!  It's tough to get into and doesn't fit too well on this album.  It has a nice solo though.  C
  6. Fields Of Disbelief - Good intro.  They tried to get melodic and sing in the chorus, it's good if you can get past the second chorus (1:58).  B
  7. Three - Good Christ!  9 beats in an 8 beat measure (don't believe me?  Count the number of symbol hits in the intro and then the guitar chugs).  Has to be heard to understand how strange it is.  A
  8. Out Of Control - Good intro.  Unfortunately the intro goes throughout the song until about 2:40 seconds in.  Then it does some interesting changes and proceeds to alter between them.  B+
  9. The Other Side - Easy song to listen to.  They sing a little.  Good guitar work.  B
  10. Regret - Good song to listen to if you're looking for a build-up to anger moment.  A-
  11. Sever The Ties - Good guitar work but can get very boring in the middle.  B-
  12. Choices - This songs sounds the same throughout.  Just O.k.  C
  13. Voice Of Reason - Three distinct riffs in this song make it good to listen to.  B+
