The sophomore release from this band that
completely blows away their last release (Pissing Razors) by at
least a grade and change on the skin-split-o-meter gauge. How did
this album become so better than the previous release? Well, shut
up a minute and I'll tell you! Man you guys are pushy!
O.k., the first thing they did was they kept Pantera
as a major influence but used less of their work and tried some original
stuff. As for the Fear Factory stuff they were using in the
previous release, they almost dropped that entirely. Instead they
added...SOLOS (in the key of C)! About time. Now let's add
more fun to the pile. More bell work on the symbols (like a
cowbell sound but not quite) on this release than the previous and more
double bass! Double bass is almost a must for Skin Splitter to
like it. With double bass comes more speed and a tighter
sound! Also the drum work is a little more in the forefront then
the previous release. It's almost as if a band member said,
"Hey wait, this guy is good, let's bring him into the fun,"
and I do use the word fun because that's what this album is. Fun
to listen to and fun to play (although the same "This sounds too
much like Pantera" argument will come up). It could be
the offbeat work as well as good, but awkward, transitions that keep me
interested (like Cannibal Corpse). The point is that if you
like Pantera's guitar style and want to hear stuff like it,
(because hell, their not going to come up with new material any time
soon) this might be a band to check out!
Song Notes:
- Mass Corruption - Fast, fun, and
violent. Dare you to find a song this fast on their last
album. Great awkward transitions. B+
- Truth in Disguise - More speed with
some weird slows, as well. Not a lot of tough guitar work here
(although there is a solo), but good drum work especially with the
symbols. B
- Survival Of Time - This song should
have been on the last release. It's not very good.
Change at 1:22 is o.k. but it goes back to the intro after and isn't
that much fun. C-
- Cast Down the Plague - Now that's
better. Back to metal with speed and offbeat work and awkward
transitions. B+
- Box Life - Straight up song with a
solo. Not bad but nothing too special here. C
- Understand - Good polyrhythmic
intro. Nice breakdown. Some transitions in this one take
away from the rawness of this song. B
- Sympathy - Ever wonder what it's
like to play too many notes to create a drum beat? That's the
intro. Rest of the song isn't bad either, but it's basically
one note and a little chord burst and goes with the intro
well. B
- Forever - I don't know what they
were thinking on this one, but it sucks except for a part around
1:17. Goes away at 1:51 D
- Vexed - It's a slower song, but
something about it catches my attention in the intro. Some
weird downward chord work in the middle as well. B+
- Away - I would do exactly what the
song title is and just skip past this one and stay away.
Boring, slow, lots of "dead air." D
- Mistake No. 1 - Medium paced song
with some interesting drum work. Guitar leaves a little more
to be desired, but... B-
- Reality of War - Good drum work as
usual. The guitar tries to make a presence but something is
lost there. C
- Train of Thought - A song that
should have been on the last album as well. I would stop
listening after the song above. D
