Straight outta Cleveland, Ohio, Odious
Sanction refers to their style of grind as
"stompcore". I'm not sure exactly what stompcore is, but
after listening to Psychotically Enraged I have found it sounds
just like regular furious grind with hardcore-style vocals. Maybe
if you want to be in a stompcore band, you have to dedicate entire
tracks on your album to samples so it looks bigger regardless of it
being a hair over 26 minutes long. You would also have to consider
putting a picture of a guy with a crescent wrench on the actual CD
stomping something like Odious Sanction has...because they're
totally stompcore. Or something.
Stompcore aside, Gene Burnworth on
guitar, Kevin Farley on bass, and Steve Shalaty on drums are actually
three incredibly talented musicians. The bass doesn't roam much
from the drumming and guitars, but they appear to have mastered the
tempo change and produce energy whether playing droning sludge or
whiplash-inducing grind. Scott Bryant on vocals may be the biggest
downfall to the band as his higher pitched hardcore yelps can get on
one's nerves after repeat listenings. Overall, Psychotically
Enraged offer absolutely nothing new to grind...or stompcore for
that matter. Songs blend together, riffs are generic, and even the
lyrics are typical angry-at-the-world material. Give these guys
some time to develop their sound and they have much potential, but as
for their debut it's nothing but average.
Song Notes:
- Intro
- A good intro to start the disc with. Instead of some boring,
mellow instrumental wankery we are greeted with swearing, gunshots,
things breaking, etc. A-
- Creation Of The End -
Nice, straightforward riff but the slow parts are just plain
boring. B
- Almost Everyone - Sounds
a lot like Creation Of The End, and should have come later on
in the track listing. D+
- Sample - Another sample,
but this one features Al Pacino from And Justice For All.
Anything with Al Pacino is cool with me, although why it needs an
entire track just to set up Tested Sanity I don't know.
B-
- Tested Sanity -
Impressive drumming as far as Steve Shalaty is concerned, but it's a
little slow. C-
- Psychotically Enraged -
Stupid mosh song with average drumming. D
- Punishment Of Life -
Starts out with a lingering chug, then turns into some maniac
grind. Very interesting structure and nice tempo
changes. A-
- Sanction Of Trust -
Generic grind with a cool sound bite at the end. D+
- Future Of Nothing - Sick
drumming and an overall intense song. It's a little
forgettable though coming as track 9. C+
- Negative World -
Drumming is mixed up a bit which is a nice change from everything
else on this album. B
- Complexity Mind Crank -
The slow parts just drone on and on, but when it picks up it's 100%
furious. C+
- Sample - Enough with the
entire tracks dedicated to samples already. At least this is
only a few seconds long. D-
- Narc - Yeah, you might
as well close the album with some generic grind with a sample at the
end... D+
