Skin Splitter's Review:
Did you hear that?  Of course you didn't!  You were too busy playing "Hide the Maglite" with Darcy, the wheel chaired girl next door.  Oh sure, she can't stand but she's completely "gullably-abled".  Well, for those of you paying attention (and believe me you better be paying attention) you just heard my ass getting kicked.  And I mean kicked like Mule at point blank range.  Why is this so?  Because I just listened to Marc Rizzo's solo album and I am in awe of his guitar and musical skills.

Who would have ever known that this nobody from New Jersey who was in a terrible band (Ill Niño) can shred faster than Zakk Wylde, be more melodic that Eric Johnson, and be more musical than Satriani.  I guess Max Cavalera or he wouldn't have chosen him for Soulfly (anyone listen to "Frontlines" like Horatio told you to?)  This is no shit.  This guy is the real deal.  I have never heard anything like this all from one guy.

This solo album is completely (with the exception of a bonus track) instrumental.  It is a specially mixed tossed salad of metal songs, classical musical phrases (in electric or acoustic), and just for assholes and shoe leather, flamenco.  If that wasn't enough fun, in some songs THEY PLAY ALL THREE!  This creates a love hate relationship.  Some reviews hate that some songs switch back and forth from acoustic to electric; however, I think it adds to the flavor.  I mean hell; I don't hear anyone around combining a metal riff with heavy distortion in the key of "C", to a complete audio assault of flamenco acoustic guitar, back to metal riffs.  And this doesn't happen once, this happens often.

I would have to say that at least 2/3 of the songs on this album are fast.  And I mean fast like "Holy shit! What the hell just happened?".  I think they had to use drum machines for some of it because there is no way a drummer could keep up with Captain Rizzo.  Not only that, but Lord Rizzo also puts a lot of different string combinations.  Why is that so important?  Because it creates different sounds.  Sounds that no one else is using and sounds that can eventually be "trademarks" of a good guitar player (think of a band that has a guitar player that as soon as he starts playing, you know who it is).

A co-conspirator, back in the day, told me that he likes Moby's music because it was "sensual".  By sensual he meant that there was a lot going on and many different sounds to key in on.  The same rule applies here.  There are a lot of things going on in this album.  And like I said in the beginning, you have to be paying attention or the speed and note selection will go over your head.

The only drawback to this album is availability.  The last time I knew, there were six of these CDs left unpurchased in the entire state of New Hampshire (yeah I know big shit but 6 times 50 = 300 TOTAL).  So, if you want to hear some of this stuff, the only way to do it is to either illegally download it, look for him on "My Space," or listen to clips on cdnow.com.  Or just try to find it on eBay.  Last time I knew, they were going to re-release it but no date has been confirmed as far as I know.  And, if he is hosting a guitar clinic in your area...GO!  I guarantee he won't be doing lame spinkicks anymore.
