Skin Splitter's Review:
As The Palaces Burn.  The second mainstream release from the band Lamb Of God.  Their first album "New American Gospel" was a fine, fine album full of good drum work (I love it when drums are tuned nice and high to get a good solid "pop" sound.  Almost like a metal on metal sound), good guitar work (a drop-D style guitar playing using the famous Slayer off key notes), and a solid bass (although you don't hear much of it).  It was quite enjoyable.  Even if the vocals were a little tough to get into (think of a combination of Cannibal Corpse and Pantera vocals for sound and style).  Needless to say, I was a little skeptical about picking this one up just in fear that they may have tried to mess with their sound to get more "mainstream."

Well that sure as hell didn't happen.  This album picked up right where "New American Gospel" ended.  Just strict straight out kick you while you're down metal.  For those of you who familiar with Killswitch Engage, they sound very close to Lamb Of God.  If you haven't, then think of it this way:  If you like good drums in which the double bass follows the guitars in terms of speed and tempo (like Fear Factory), I suggest this album.  If you like new Slayer and their off key tunings, and Megadeth style guitars, this album has it although I will warn you it will sound like Slayer or Megadeth in some parts and not in others.  This album is not as fast as a Slayer album but still very good.  The vocals are not bad on this one either.  Same style as on "New American Gospel", but they seem to work better on this album then the last one.  Maybe it's because I can understand what he is saying this time.  All in all a good solid second release (although only 38 minutes) from the Richmond Va. band.

Song summaries include...

1. Ruin - Typical metal song nothing special.  Good tempo change at 2:40.  That's the part I really like!  B
2. As The Palaces Burn - Good, fast paced song with Slayer riffs and southern style.  A-
3. Purified - Fast paced song but not much changes (until 2:06) so it can get a little repetitious.  C
4. 11th Hour - Best song on the album.  Fun to listen to and keeps your attention throughout.  Slayer all the way.  A
5. For Your Malice - Good drum work, but not that much fun to listen to on guitar.  Straight standard metal song.  C
6. Boot Scraper - Good offbeat drums and guitar.  A lurching style song.  Good tempo changes and good guitar low to high ratio.  B+
7. A Devil In God's Country - Pretty standard Megadeth song here until 2:24, then it goes into a more Cannibal Corpse style guitar and drums.  Almost like two songs put together.  Stick to the second part of the song.  B
8. In Defense Of Your Good Name - Megadeth and Slayer combo style guitars with fast drumming.  At 2:08 tempo changes into a fun offbeat lurching style.  B-
9. Blood Junkie - The first minute sounds like White Zombie, then into death metal, 1:45 changes to a Slayer style.  2:28 goes into the offbeat lurching style again.  Not bad.  A-
10. Vigil - Clean toned guitar intro, then it goes into a slow off key riff, then at 2:45 goes into some fast playing that sounds almost like Pantera's Shattered (or downtuned 80's).  Not a bad ending song.  B
