Horatio's Review:
I have owned this album for at least a decade but have never once sat through it.
Every time I try I pay full attention but invariably nod off, drifting away in traffic, nearly causing a ten car pile
up... By 1990 Kreator were phoning it in, 'Coma Of Souls' simply a recycled version of
'Extreme Aggression' and even less obsessive than their crude mid 80's origins, circa
'Endless Pain'. The gap between European and US thrash was never more evident than in 1990, as the big four continues to
define the genre with albums full of speed with melody and tangents that actually maintained the listeners attention.
Kreator had fallen along with their compadres like Sodom (from whom Blackfire had been drafted) and came across as second rate.
The speed levels are high and the riffing is concise but the one
dimensional melody lines and lack of inventive chord changes made for a dreadful album.
Only once does the album catch fire, and that's for a mere fifteen seconds during the intro of
'Hidden Dictator', which suggests briefly that when pushed Kreator could hang with
Slayer, if from a vast vantage point. Aside from that this is the epitome of bad thrash and why the genre died.
And from a band who were supposed to be a genre leader. Thankfully their later albums were improved, which proves how much the band was going through the motions in 1990.
Simply boring.
