Uncle Meat's Review:
I’ve always had an affinity for 1980's Priest.
Turbo and Ram It Down were my first introductions to this stellar band.
Over the years I’ve been stocking my collection with their 1970's heavy metal classics and the godly
Painkiller, but the 80's are never far from my player. Why you ask?
Despite the fact that Priest had gone into more synth dominated pop song territory they are, for all intensive purposes, good songs.
In retrospect Turbo is pretty cheesy, and not even in the top five of
Priest, but it is kind of a kitsch factor.
Which brings me to Priest... Live! First of all, it’s a pretty shitty title.
One live album called Unleashed In The East then Priest...Live!
Anyway, the album itself is a fun, if unsatisfying listen. The sound is terrific, with the crowd noises kept in check.
My main problem is the performances. The band sounds like they are going through the motions.
Lifeless, especially in the drum department, but that has always been a sore spot in the
Priest catalogue. Also a better song selection might have been more appropriate, but what are you going to do?
Song summaries include...
-
Out In The Cold - Synth drone intro followed by a mid-tempo rocker.
Not a great song and an awful idea for an album opener. C
-
Heading Out To The Highway - The kickoff track
from Point Of Entry sounds terrific here. A bit faster than
Out In The Cold, this song sounds heavier than its studio counterpart.
B
-
Metal Gods - Great, if simple, song.
B
-
Breaking The Law - This quirky number has the misfortune of being one of the most overplayed
Priest songs (Ok maybe next to You’ve Got Another Thing Coming which is also included here!
The video, for Breaking The Law didn’t help much either).
A fun little number. A-
-
Love Bites - Terrible.
One of the worst Priest songs. D
-
Some Heads Are Going To Roll - Having not heard this song before I was shocked at how good it was (I’ve since picked up the record).
Sporting some very tight rhythm playing this track also helps Dave Holland rip on the drums.
B
-
The Sentinel - Jam-your-fist-in-the-air metal.
Incredible lead work. The synth breakdown in the middle is a nice break and relatively short.
B
-
Private Property - Uh oh,
Turbo material. Even if Turbo was an experimental album there is no excuse for writing a song this bad.
It should have been left on the cutting room floor. Bland pop-metal.
D-
-
Rock You All Around The World - This song does indeed rock.
All around the world is another story. I remember having a Judas Priest song book when I was little and playing along to this song.
Another in a line of fist banging metal anthems. Short, precise, no fluff.
A
-
Electric Eye - Another song I was unfamiliar with at first.
I wish I had been in attendance for this show because during the intro it sounded like the pyrotechnics were unleashed.
Similar to The Sentinel, but not quite up to the former's power.
C+
-
Turbo Lover - Before this song Rob Halford says something to the effect of, ”now it's time for something, something to make you
hard. The title track for the Turbo album. Let’s go with
TURBO LOVER”. If only his enthusiasm matched the song.
This song's lame cheesiness is something to behold. The rhythm part that comes in at around 1:20 is pretty good.
The rest is forgettable crap. D+
-
Freewheel Burning - Always the metal statement.
Fun indeed. B+
-
Parental Guidance - Skip this song.
D
-
Living After Midnight - Try not jumping around the room when this song plays.
Cheesy: yes. Overplayed: yes. Far removed from Judas
Priest's glory days: yes. Killer song metal hybrid song: yes.
B
-
You’ve Got Another Thing Coming - Talk about overplayed.
Pop-metal, but this song has an endearing quality like no other.
Try turning it off and I bet you can’t. B
