Horatio's Review:
Iron Maiden's debut with
Blaze Bayley at the helm isn't the bomb many would have you think, but it
is easily one of the bands poorest efforts. Tracks like '2 AM',
'Blood On The World's Hands', 'The Unbeliever', 'The
Aftermath', 'The Edge Of Darkness', and 'Lord Of The Flies'
will test the most faithful fans' patience, all drawn out and without any
real urgency. The epic element is on overload, and only once with 'Man
On The Edge' does the band play it straight down the line, a three
minute slice of traditional Maiden. Typically the b-sides
recorded for the singles were infinitely better than anything on the
album, 'Justice Of The Peace', 'I Live My Way' and 'Judgement
Day' all short and to the point in a manner the final album never
accomplishes. Blaze is used wrong, pushed into serious mode and it
hurts he and the band.
