Horatio's Review:
Following Dickinson's departure from Maiden in 1993, the band unwisely released two posthumous live albums, one titled
'A Real Live One' comprised of more recent Maiden material (1986-92) and this, a set of classic era Maiden (1980-84).
The album was recorded on Dickinson's (then) last tour with Maiden and it shows.
Half-hearted efforts all round and a stale set list make this an uninspiring listen, documenting just how worn out this lineup was.
Did we need to hear more live versions of 'The Number Of The Beast',
'Sanctuary', 'Running Free', 'Run To The Hills' , 'The
Trooper' and 'Iron Maiden'? As dull as you would expect, with no signs of improvisation or power, just straight run throughs.
'Prowler', 'Transylvania', 'Remember Tomorrow' and 'Where Eagles
Dare' are tolerable, especially the latter, with some overdue power from all concerned.
Astonishingly, the band sounds more alive on the lesser played tracks than the overdone classics.
They should have pulled songs like 'Sun And Steel', 'Drifter',
'Back In The Village' and 'Gangland' out of their pockets and made this worth the time to release.
Maybe it was titled like that on purpose, only this is more than dead.
