Internal Bleeding - Voracious Contempt

Quick Summary:
Death metal band formed in 1991 in New York.  This is not a bad album in terms of death metal.  Doesn’t have the chaos as Cannibal Corpse or Morbid Angel, in fact, it’s pretty straightforward, but if you like the main riff, you’ll probably like the entire song.  This album has good drums, good vocals, and good times.  The bass is very prominent in this album.  It adds an element that is sometimes ignored in metal today.  The drummer is very fast with his hands (especially the snare) as well as his feet (triggered bass drums), which is a nice thing because it adds another element to this band.  Another thing I like about this album is the vocals.  Frank Rini is a big guy.  He looks like singing death metal is a good thing for him or he would be in prison eating roommates.  Plus, although his voice is low, you can understand part of what he is saying.  Probably because he is saying it very slowly.

My main issue with this album, besides the lack of tempo changes, originality between songs, filler, (in fact, I’m beginning to wonder what I did like about it…), is the guitar tone and speed.  For speed, it’s a little slow for death metal.  Or it could be the tone that makes it just sound slow.  As for tone, it’s awful.  It sounds like notes being played through a TV with no antenna.  So all you hear is bass, drums, and radio static.  I can’t even tell what tuning they are using.  Or even figure out if they even are playing notes.  And how the hell they got harmonics to sound out of that stuff is just nuts.  Plus, after a while, all the songs begin to sound the same.  So, production really hurts this album (and yes my copy is an original).  Usually when Scott Burns produces an album (Cannibal Corpse comes to mind), you get to hear everything.  In this case, the drums bury out all of the other instruments.  If you listen to this, be sure you're playing a video game or something and are using this for background noise.  Because this CD won’t hold your attention for very long.

Song Summaries:

  1. Introduction/Languish in Despair - Weird ass carnival organ
intro.  Creepy because I hate the circus.  Right off the bat, they lead
with the crappy guitar sound.  Nice drum work however, many a snare hit on this one.  Some harmonics are thrown in for the giggles as well.  B
  2. Anointed In Servitude - Mixed up fast/slow tempos make this
song acceptable to listen to.  Not too fantastic and after a while you can skip through the song.  C-
  3. Reflection Of Ignorance - My favorite song on the album.  Just
for the drum work alone.  Combine that with a zombie like slow pace, and you have all the ingredients to a fairly decent death metal song.  B+
  4. Epoch Of Barbarity - Sounds like death metal, but it doesn’t
feel like death metal.  Something is missing and I can’t put my finger on it.  For some reason I hear this song and I want to skip it every time.  D
  5. Gutted Human Sacrifice - Nice fast intro.  Now, if they kept that speed it would have been a good song, but no they didn’t and slowed it down.  But don’t skip it yet.  It goes back to the speed and gets better again.  B-
  6. God Of Subservience - Remember the movie that was from?  I hope you do because it’s a classic.  However, this song is not a classic.  It sounds like all the other songs.  (A for the intro, D for the song).  D+
  7. Prophet Of The Blasphemes - Sounds like all the others above.  D+
  8. Humanicide - Different intro.  Nice use of speaker skips.  This
one has some alright guitar work.  It also has some different rhythms to keep me entertained.  B-
  9. Inhuman Suffering - Old hat.  Makes for nice background music
    when playing QuakeC-
  10. Despoilment Of Rotting Flesh - The most interesting part of
this song is to listen to the bass.  However, you have to sift through a lot of crap to do it.  D-
