Green Beret - Green Beret
2000 Pink Pentagram Records
by Shev

Quick Summary:
Tired of the same old same old? Here comes Green Beret to
save the day out of...Alabama? Not exactly the metal capitol of the
world, so I guess whatever unused musical creativity was floating around
in their water supply ended up in the hands of Green Beret.
Unable to fit into any kind of genre, main influences of this band include
grindcore, noise, hardcore, death metal, rock and roll, and surf among
many smaller inspirations.
Unlike many other bands with a slew of
different styles, Green Beret has no problems fusing their techniques
into one big chaotic symphony. Each member of the band seems to bring
something distinctive to the table resulting in creative sloppy weirdness
worthy of an X-Files investigation. Although this debut full length
does have a few duds, even the duds are worthy of repeat play. This
disc literally has something for every one, and truly is the epitome of
"the best band you've never heard".

Song Summaries:
- Involuntary Organ Donor -
Hilarious grind mixed with bizarre keyboards and roughly a million
different vocal styles. Genius A+
- Trapjaw - Off key grind mixed
with carnival music. Awesome stuff. A-
- Show Me Your Warface - Everything
about this song is so bad that it's good. B+
- Tumor - Leaps right in from
"Show Me Your Warface". It's mostly pure surf
which is an odd thing to thrown in, but it's still very catchy. A
- Bury The Hatchet - Some more Green
Beret-ish grinding noise. Too short and unfortunately
nothing stands out. C-
- Night Of The Hunter - Just plain
strange, but the bass sounds phenomenal. B
- Danger Dance - Straight-forward
keyboard-driven grind with troll and hardcore vocals. Takes a
break before really turning strange, complete with glass shattering
opera vocals and their version of traditional Russian folk music.
B+
- Life Of Death - Hilarious intro,
but the song is typical Green Beret nonsense and fun. B-
- 100 Talons - A second great intro
followed by sludge transforming into grind/noise. C+
- Origins Of Yer/Agua De Muerto -
Another beach blonde surf song, but with annoying high pitch shifted
vocals. D
- Ranger's First Song - This is
nothing but the lead singer in all his hyperactive glory singing about
the Rangers. B
- Garden Of Green Beret - Prologue -
Simple and annoying keyboards along with vocals that can barely keep
up with the music. C-
- Garden Of Green Beret Part One -
Sick, fast noise with a quick bass plucking break. No keyboards
at all. B
- Garden Of Green Beret Part Two -
Just like Garden Of Green Beret Part One, but with keys, female
vocals, and more of a rock influence. B+
- Garden Of Green Beret Part Three -
Sloppy garbage. D
- Garden Of Green Beret Part Four -
Total chaos finale. B+
- Ebola In Your Cola/Electric Funeral -
Relentless sounds effects and aggression followed by one of the most
creative Black Sabbath covers ever recorded. A
Average Song Rating: B
Overall Album Rating: A
