Grave - Hating Life
1996 Century Media
by Uncle Meat

Quick Summary:
Ah...the Swedish people and their
metal. The great thing about this section of the world and their
metal is that all the bands sound a little similar yet are
distinguishable. They all have their death metal sound: Loud
distorted guitars; death growls; and rapid fire drumming. However,
these groups all have their own sound that makes this regions stand out.
Grave started out as Corpse in the late 80’s and established
their style with some demos and their Into the Grave in 1991.
Many have compared Grave to Entombed, but while Grave
mainly sticks to their death metal sound, Entombed throw in a rock
feel. Hating Life marks the debut of Ola Lindgren, the band’s
guitarist, as a vocalist. While he has the talent, his voice comes
across as one dimensional on the record.

Song Summaries:
- Worth The Wait - Big guitar
sound. The song sounds like it was taken form Wolverine Blues.
The drum sound is a little uneven. B
- Restrained - Sounds like a rehash
of "Worth The Wait". Drums sound stronger on
this song. Also the guitar solo, while short, is more than just
noise. B-
- Winternight - This song has more
of a hardcore/jump around feel than the more metal sound of the
previous two songs. Becomes more metal as the song
progresses. C-
- Two Of Me - Starts off very slow,
the opening sounds like the opening of Beneath the Remains.
The song then descends into Entombed-worship territory.
The drum sound is much improved on this song. B+
- Beauty Within - Part death metal,
part thrash. The bass perks up in this song, along with some
unwelcomed guitar squeals. C-
- Lovesong - More
thrashiness. The middle section has some stuttered riffs and a
few guitar “leads”. B-
- Sorrowfilled Moon - ”Sorrow
filled moon shines through my six feet room...”. A faster
version of an old KISS song. Another nice guitar
solo. B
- Harvest Day - A little Obituary
is thrown into the mix for good measure. Interesting bass notes
towards the end of the song. B+
- Redress - Much heavier and faster
than previous songs. More traditional death metal. Jensa
finally gets a chance to show off some chops. C
- Still Hating Life - Acoustic
guitar, space, then a Spanish influenced guitar. B
