Shev's Review:
With Gaahl finally out of prison, this sick Norwegian black metal act
finally set out to record their fifth full length album. With the loss
of Tormentor, what could one expect? Would this even hold a candle up
to their previous masterpiece, "Incipit Satan"?
Luckily for fans of Gorgoroth, not only has "Twilight Of The
Idols" met all expectations, but I would go so far as to say this
is their best release yet. Focusing
their attention on a war-like sound, Gorgoroth marches forth
unleashing their best produced album to date. It's no secret why the
band members waited for Gaahl to be released from the old calaboose, as he
stringently delivers some unrelenting and inordinate vocals. Backing
him up is some truly inspired guitar work which brings an almost death metal
mixed with Immortal flavor to the overall tone. Their newest
drummer, Kvitrafn, also does a phenomenal job with his hysteric acerbity on
the kit. Gorgoroth delivers a notable amount of variety here,
and in a starving genre such as modern black metal, it's nice to see
releases such as this keeping things alive. Let's hope they can stay
out of jail long enough for a sixth full length.
Song summaries include...
- Procreating Satan - 3:42 of raw
black metal fury. Blast beats and lyrics get a little
repetitious, but what an incredible song. A
- Proclaiming Mercy (Damaging Instinct
Of Man) - Well written black metal with a sludgy
marching-off-to-war sound. It seems to lack enthusiasm, but
certainly not formidable by any means. C
- Exit Through Carved Stones - Picking up
with the same militant tone from "Proclaiming Mercy (Damaging
Instinct Of Man)", this quickly turns into some eerie, mid-paced
black metal weighing in at over five and a half minutes long. B+
- Teethgrinding - Unquestionably
not something I was expecting, this sounds like later styled Samael
minus the industrial. The ending minute or so picks up into a
more standard Gorgoroth tone, but overall definitely not
bad. Just takes a little time to grow on you. B
- Forces Of Satan Storms - Think Marduk,
but with better riffs, more style, and a 100 to 0 MPH interlude.
The blast beats really kill this one, unfortunately. C-
- Blod Og Minne - In like a lion,
out like a lamb. Almost three and a half minutes of generic
filler. D
- Of Ice And Movement - Gorgoroth
shines in this 6:42 epic by breaking it down into four unique
sections. Things commence violently with a coupling of blast
beats and unpretentious guitars. After roughly two minutes, they
switch into a thicker Viking metal tone for a little over a minute,
then decline even more for a more-aggressive-than-melodic, almost
early Gothenberg-ish, styled sound. Finally, this is capped off
with machine like whirs and blips with subtle vocals in the
background. A-
- Domine In Tua Laetavitur Rex -
Keyboards made to sound like an organ, but instead come off as gloomy
video game music. Almost reminiscent of Ravel, and not
too bad if you can look past the poor sound. C+
