Shev's Review:
You really have to appreciate a name like "Exploding Meth Lab".  There's no beating around the bush with a name like this.  As far as honest, gritty noisecore goes, the description is all in the name.  Can you expect some hybrid goregrind-thrash-country outfit?  Nope, just noise.  How about some glam-cybergrind-klezmer-jazz?  Nope, just noise.  Not even gorgonzola-core-toilet-rock-grunge-mince-blues?  Nope...you get the picture.

Exploding Meth Lab is the two-man brainchild of ex-members of bands like Blower, Enemy Soil, and The Index.  Their main influences include such staples as Aunt Mary, The Gerogerigegege, Seven Minutes Of Nausea, and early Anal Cunt...which leads to a very distinct, noisy sound in vein of Merzbow meets The Gerogerigegege minus the senzuri aspect with the creative touch of the likes of Yamatsuka Eye.  A really frightening and pummeling assault of nasty noise to say the least.

Following up their previous 2004 demo, "The Seedmouth", the percussion consists of mostly bland blast beats of varying tempo's usually kept off to the side to compliment and really add to what these guys are trying to accomplish...much like the vocals which come across as deeply pitch-shifted burps not unlike Gut.  Basically, one would be foolish to expect the musical aspect of Exploding Meth Lab's second demo to play anything but second fiddle to the consuming whirlwind of chaos.

Available as a one-sided cassette, I was surprised to find that it was lacking not only song titles, but an actual song count. There are certainly five distinct songs on display here, with songs four and five really stealing the show, but I was interested to hear what Exploding Meth Lab would use as inspiration to name these things.  So I shot an E-Mail over to Mason, and he replied with what I consider to be a brilliant example of making a demo like this all the more enjoyable to decipher, "We actually decided not to name songs.  I know this probably sounds like pretentious bullshit, but the idea was to present the listener with a real minimal amount of information, so that hearing the tape isn't made any 'easier' by having a familiar point of reference, like goofy song titles, or political song titles, or gore-influenced song titles, etc.  We just didn't want to make our motivations quite so obvious, if that makes any sense."

You're probably not going to find this is your local music shop...much less the mall...so your best bet is to get in touch with Mason through E-Mail: Unit731Tapes@hotmail.com.  If you're into well-made noise, and don't mind listening to a cassette, this is definitely a good buy.  Especially for only $2 postage paid (for those residing in the states, I can only assume).
