Shev's Review:
One of the last things I like to see is one of my favorite bands release an album of nothing but cover songs.
I dig it when bands will put together a cover or two to pay tribute to an influence, but a whole album's worth of nothing but other band's material is usually not something I'm willing to part with perfectly good cash for...but seeing as it's
Exhumed we're talking about here, what the hell.
There's certainly an interesting selection of songs available. Choices such as
"Twisted Face" by Sadus and "Uninformed" by
Unseen Terror are obvious, but there are some very non-Exhumed-like tunes to be had, as well.
"A Reflection" by The Cure? "No
Quarter" by Led Zeppelin? I had to double check that one to make sure I read it right.
Even for non-Exhumed fans, you can't help but be a little interested at what a
Led Zeppelin cover could possibly sound like. And really, this is where
Exhumed earns my respect with a cover album. They're not taking personal favorites and trying to duplicate them with a little bit of their own sound thrown in.
Every song on here is performed by Exhumed as if they personally wrote it themselves for a full-length release.
If you think these guys are going to attempt to sing a Samhain song any way but their way, you're going to be in for a surprise.
It's not their material, but it's still very much Exhumed paying homage to some classic punk, rock, crust, thrash, grind, doom, and death.
I can't believe I'm about to say this about a bunch of mis-matched cover songs from a band who prides themselves in sick, gore-drenched grind, death, and thrash...but I'm glad I gave this a shot.
Exhumed did a highly respectable job.
