Uncle Meat's Review:
Horror fanatic thrashers return after
an absence to bring more mysteries of the macabre to their
listeners. After 1997’s zombie madness walkthrough Fearless
Undead Machines, Deceased return with a non-concept album about
different horror stories. Fearless Undead Machines could have
become a one trick pony in the horror/zombie subject, I mean really, how
original. No matter, Deceased are experts in this field.
One decision, conscience or not, was shorter songs. Most songs tap out
around the 5 minute mark. Deceased have a knack for meshing
(old school) thrash with more mainline metal. Part Slayer, part
Iron Maiden. I've always liked King’s vocals. Neither
too high or low, its a perfect fit for the songs. I was hooked right
away after first hearing Fearless Undead Machines and have been a fan
ever since. While this album is somewhat hit or miss, its nowhere near
the failure it could have been.
Song summaries include...
- The Premonition
- Thrashy opening/verse. Excellent example of the Adams/Smith
guitar team: Solid riffs/hooks; excellent solos. Pit
madness. A-
- Dark Chilling
Heartbeat - Don’t let the slow opening fool you, once the
verse kicks in this number rivals Slayer on their best
day. The breakdown/audio clip section gives off a NWOBHM
feel. B+
- A Very Familiar
Stranger - Another song that starts out fast, slows down,
then speeds up again. B
- Frozen Screams
- Lots ‘o riffs + great drumming = B
- The Doll With
The Hideous Spirit - Bass/audio clip opening. The
verse lacks some of the punch of the earlier songs. At the 1:15
mark the song becomes The Premonition-lite. The wild, out
of control solos are a plus. B-
- The Hanging
Solider - The riff right after “The Hanging Solider”
part makes this one of the standout tracks. Also the slower
parts with the hanging notes/melodies. A-
- Chambers Of The
Waiting Blind - Mid-tempo thrasher which never shifts out
of first gear. More inspired solos from Smith/Adams. C
- Elly’s
Dementia - This is a real simple song. While that
isn't inherently bad, Deceased can do better. One
plodding main riff. At 2:38 the song pick up into more of a Slayer-type
riff. At 5:28 the band slips into Six Feet Under
territory for a few seconds. The screams at the end of the song
are a nice touch. B
