Shev's Review:
Following up one of the best albums of 2001, Dave Brockie Experience unleashes
Songs For The Wrong unto the world. As could be expected with everything else Dave Brockie has done including his more popular band,
GWAR, this album has progressed since Diarrhea Of A Madman.
Instead of a more rock influenced continuation of We Kill Everything,
Songs For The Wrong could have very well been called Carnival Of Chaos
Lite...except Carnival Of Chaos was a good album. This unfortunately falls short (hence the low price tag?)
Gone are many of the things that made Diarrhea Of A Madman stand out like epic works and an even mix of diversity and intensity.
Instead, we have a few great songs, a few good songs, some filler, and a lot of unmemorable junk in various forms like pop-punk and repetitious rock.
Granted, the talent is as strong as you would expect from these three, but the music just does not click with the exception of a few tracks which gives it the feel of a debut effort from a band trying to find their groove, not a sophomore release from a band with a proven solid base to stand on.
The following song notes are overly kind...
-
Damn That Money - Great sloppy punk song, but the repetitive lyrics helps the song become old fast.
A-
-
Slowpoke - The swanky guitar sounds awful and complimented by a terrible chorus.
Easily one of DBX's worst songs. D-
-
Should The Ugly Girl Blow Me? - Frolicking-through-the-park-before-a-picnic music.
D
-
The Chinese Have No Cheese - Lyrics are a little too retarded even for
DBX, but a solid punky song regardless. B+
-
Music Is Like Beer - Short, fun song.
B
-
Hard For A 'Tard - A little light, and actually could very well be a new
Misfits song. C
-
I Wanna Be A Squirrel - A pop-punk chick song, but not too bad for what it is.
C-
-
Shatilla - Short, fast, and memorable song.
A
-
He's Going Crazy! - Ridiculous repetition.
Unlistenable. F
-
Make Money Off Your Friends - Another quality
Hell-O!-ish song. B+
-
Dog Log - A kids song?
No, a Death Piggy cover. D+
-
Slips Of Paper - Really cool, heavy song with the lyrics sounding really desperate and slightly insane.
A little slow for what it is. B
-
March Of The Faggot Soldiers - Homophobes beware.
Hilarious gay military anthem song. A
-
Hey Buddy - Piss poor beginning, but sets up for the better of the two
Death Piggy covers. C-
-
Medieval Werewolf - If
GWAR made Carnival of Chaos part II, this song would be on it.
The repeating of "Medieval Werewolf" 50,000 times gets old quick.
C+
-
Churchmouse In The Snow - The only serious song on the release, and although it sticks out like a sore thumb, it's a very well done slow and atmospheric song.
B+
-
Isn't It Grand Boys? - Irish drinking music
DBX style. A-
