Lamp's Review:
The Daughters formed out the ashes of what was
As The Sun Sets, and
after putting out a one-sided 7", they came forward with this release.
Obviously, since three out of the five members of this band used to be in As
The Sun Sets, no matter how ashamed they are of that band, it is going to sound somewhat
like the old band because they have played together before. The odd riffs
have taken a new path in general oddness, there's a lot of sliding going on.
And by sliding, I mean on the stringed instruments. The notes blend together in an almost spooky fashion at times with groovy bass melodies
and hard hitting drum beats to accompany them. There are lots of parts
arranged in 3/4 timing with plenty of double bass and other rumble to go along with it.
Lex is at his sharpest with the vocal quality adding a
distinctly sharp, scratchy tone to his voice which to me is an improvement
over the almost whiny vocals on the As The Sun Sets releases 7744 and
8949. The lyrics are a different story unfortunately. Often times the lyrics have
nothing to do with the song title and are pretty much always incoherent.
There's even something in Jones From Indiana that looks like part of a script
from a TV show. I guess it doesn't matter though, since you can't understand
the lyrics anyway. So my final words are this: The music is fantastic,
the lyrics are awful, and a lot of these songs have commas in the title.
