Skin Splitter's Review:
Boston, Mass. based band that I had
heard of before, but had never seen in concert or listened to them until
"The Fallen Friends Benefit". Now, I have to admit
that I liked them live, but an album is different then a live performance
ANY time (think of Guns N' Roses). This is one of those
albums that is a crossbreed of genres. On the one aspect, it's pure
raw death metal. On the other hand it provides a hardcore, Swedish
death, Iron Maiden-style (Bleeding Through and Arch Enemy
immediately comes to mind). It's a fairly good album for being their
second release. The positives are the good double bass (not
unbelievably fast, but a good tempo nonetheless) and the guitar
work. In fact, the first four songs are pretty good.
However, with every good
must come the bad. One main problem is the vocals aren't that great.
Think of Arch Enemy/Bleeding Through-style vocals and you
get the picture. If you don't know what that sounds like, think Cannibal
Corpse but with higher pitched vocals. Still not helping?
FINE, KILLSWITCH ENGAGE SOUND! Another problem is the lack of
originality in their sound or the repetitiveness of the songs.
Basically, if you heard this without knowing who it was, you could pick 10
- 75 bands that all sound like this (Arch Enemy, Bleeding
Through, Unearth, Killswitch Engage (with original
singer), etc, etc, etc). Also, the songs alone are pretty good, but
after a while, I found myself being bored with the last half of the album
and biting into my beer can to make the pain go away. However, it
must be the genre that makes it that way. It might be bad mixing on
the producer's part or something, but it seems as if every band that has
the Arch Enemy/Bleeding Through sound start off with ripping
tunes and then just have the second half of the album sound just like the
first half (don't believe me? Try Listening to Synapse and Gathering
right after each other and see if you could have told when one song
started and ended). The end result is this: Cannae
would be considered a GREAT local/garage band. Wonderful musical
talent that no one can take away, but there are too many well-established
bands that sound the same for them to make it big. My suggestion is
see them if you get a chance, but don't expect them to get world
famous. Song summaries
include...
- Synapse
- Going with the horror theme the scream is very impressive.
Tempo changes, scales, very nice. This is the best song on the
album. Get ready, it's all downhill from here... B
- Symmetry Of
Fear - The second best song on the album (get the trend
yet?). Good riffs and tempo changes. A nice follow up to Synapse.
B-
- Gathering
- Didn't I just hear this song? Oh no wait. It is SLIGHTLY
different. At :43 it gets into a pretty good part, but like all
good things, they fade... (in this case into a Fear Factory one
note/double bass part, then back to the beginning). C
- Anna's Love
- I guess they want to make a music video of this. I also guess
they want to be called Killswitch Engage 2 (the same, but
cheaper). D
- Two Feet
From The Ground - One thumb in your butt. There's a
solo, but who cares? D
- Finest
Minds - Good breakdowns if you can SUFFER through the first
50 seconds or so. But, shut off the stereo. Go to
bed. Think about what you've done. D
- Human Head
- Arch Enemy anyone? Yeah, it sounds the same to me
too... D
- Intro
- Would make a great intro...IF IT WAS AT THE FRONT OF THE CD!
Don't be artsy. It doesn’t fit you. C
- Black
Flowers - Why are you still listening to this??? You
already heard it! D
- Projector
- GOOD INTRO RIFF!! Actually it's not a bad song at all.
Except the word I was thinking wasn't Projector, but Projectile
(a rectal projectile). C
