Horatio's Review:
"Who is Boetz?" I hear a lone reader ask himself. Boetz
is a wildman. A rock and roll madman who makes Nugent look
sane. A rocker so extreme in his beliefs that Manowar look
tame by comparison. Boetz is rock and roll. I had no
idea who he was myself until a cursory check of his website just a few
minutes ago. This CD was sent to me unexpectedly, as a joke I
assume. Boetz shuns all popular culture, instead ploughing
the same direction as his self proclaimed heroes Chunk Berry and AC/DC.
Boetz also happens to be an accomplished painter, although I'm sure
nobody cares about that. I'd be behind Boetz's cause unless
his music wasn't so weak. With the backing of powerhouse label Balls
Out Records, Boetz plunders his way through some clichéd old
nonsense with riffs more akin to The Cult than AC/DC, an
unforgivable crime.
Boetz's bio reads like a sick
joke. 'His music remains a straight forward, bluesy hard rock sound
that moves like a freight train down the track of humanity'. Even I
would be ashamed to have written that. 'With ballsy emotional lyrics
soulfully soaring over gritty roaring guitars, his music is often compared
to 70's era bands like Bad Company, Aerosmith and AC/DC'.
Often compared? By who? That line would indicate Boetz is
mainstream and dissected regularly by the rock press. If Boetz
managed to copy these artists I might be less interested in skipping
tracks. The guy is trying with all his might to be an over the top
rock figure, but fails worse than Cherone-era Van Halen. He
attempts ludicrous lyrics (I'm the one to save your soul, favourite son
of rock and roll), but lacks genuine musical power. This ham
should have spent more time listening to 'Powerage' and 'Flick Of
The Switch' than 'Electric' and 'Sonic Temple'. I
doubt there's one person reading this who owns 'Call To Arms' and
that's how it should remain. When an individual has to boast about
being a rock renegade who refuses any part of the evil corporate music
empire, bucking trends and whatnot, you know he's a fraud. A real man
wouldn't have to say it. He'd just do it.
Song summaries include...
- Call To Arms
- Boetz somehow roped in Lemmy for guest vocals, all it took
was a bottle of gin and a fiver I'm sure. Boetz sounds
like an Ian Astbury clone, as does the whole track, imitating The
Cult as I strive to point out once again. Crap lyrics
everywhere, 'rock and roll soldiers who know the way, ready for
total war, it's the only way'. D
- Greenback Crack
- 'I'm the ace in the hole, in your face rock 'n' roll, got your
back, blow your stack, greenback crack'. Trying too hard to
be an outlaw Boetz! Laboured riffs with no power or
melody, this dude doesn't have it. D
- Weak At The
Knees - Boetz utilizes the same riff for the third
consecutive track, which means an automatic D. D
- Rock 'N' Roll
Is Good - Boetz rips off the Stones' 'It's
Only Rock And Roll' complete with Coverdale like vocals, only he
has the same charm as Billy Milano. What a derivative bastard
this Boetz is. He assumes he's gaining respect for being
an unabashed rocker, but without any traces of any unique traits, he's
as pathetic as Mustaine. D-
- Shinin'-
This Cult loving turkey might as well have produced a tribute
album to those boring losers as it isn't comparable to anyone except
them. Horrendous and so dull I can feel the life being drained
from me. F
- Getting Over
You - Now the man tries a slow raunchy blues rocker, a
stunning twist of events. D
- Oh Boy
- A cover of the fifties rock 'n' roll classic, which fails opposed to
the crudeness and energy of the original. F
- Don't Mean A
Thing - This album is as bland as unoriginal as Further
Lo. I keep making spelling mistakes as I can't get the words
out fast enough to demean it. The Who are in their
sixties and producing material which makes this look like the tenth
rate, disgusting rock it masquerades as. You can tell just by
looking at the photos of Boetz he fancies himself as a bit of a
tough guy, with his Triumph motorcycle and exposed leather vest
chest. D
- Wish
- Limp wristed, near ballad nonsense. AC/DC would never
do that. This album is three years old. It doesn't look
like a new one is on the horizon. D
- Almost To
Scotland - How's this for garbage - 'headed for the home
of Young, Young and Scott'. If you're such a disciple pal do
us a favour and rip them off competently to make this
listenable. He tries his hand at a bit of saucy songwriting - 'she
found my dirk blade under my kilt, swallowed my claymore up to the
hilt'. I'm laughing, only at how pathetic it is. f
anyone's interested Kicked In The Face is running a competition in
which the winner will receive a trio of CD's, including M.O.D. 'The
Rebel You Love To Hate', Further Lo 'Further Lo' and Boetz
'Call To Arms'. To enter just send me a photo of your
asshole. F
