Horatio's Review:
The general consensus of 'Seventh Star' ever since it's release 17
years ago, is that it's a piece of shit and a disgrace to the Sabbath
name. Actually, it's a piece of heavy melodic class, and far better
than nearly any Sabbath album that followed in it's wake.
People seem to forget that this was intended to be an Iommi solo album, so
hence the more 'American' feel. It's not as if it isn't heavy or
anything, and the lineup is solid - Glenn Hughes, Dave Spitz, Eric Singer
- what more could you want? Everything apparently...and every
whining bastard under the sun claimed that the original purpose of Sabbath
had been lost.
From where I sit, 'In For The Kill', 'Turn
To Stone' and 'Danger Zone' are three of Sabbath's best
ever tracks. I don't care what anyone thinks. The riffs are
deadly, there's a ton of energy and more melody you couldn't beg for.
Glenn Hughes was the second Deep Purple vocalist in a row to sing for
Sabbath, following Ian Gillan, and he turns in a classy performance,
which sadly he couldn't continue on tour, the man drugged out of his mind.
Looking back this makes a mockery of 'The Eternal Idol' and 'Headless
Cross'. Face it. This came out seventeen years ago.
Things have changed. Accept this as the classic it is.
Song summaries include...
- In For The Kill - What an opener,
a stunning barrage of galloping riffs, metal to the core. How in
clear conscience could anyone not like this? What kind of sad
shit still gets upset by this, all red faced wishing Ozzy was back?
Iommi was Sabbath anyway. Witness his guitar work here.
A+
- No Stranger To Love - Who would
have suspected Iommi so capable of AOR class like this? Ranks
with the best of them, Hughes born to sing material like this.
The best thing is that it's always heavy, even if it is a ballad of
sorts. A+
- Turn To Stone - A shitkicker,
nothing more or less. The opening minute is totally reckless,
Singer beating his kit to death, while Iommi turns on the pace.
This is heavy metal. This whips Ozzy Osbournes fat ass. A+
- Sphinx (The Guardian) - A short
mysterious instrumental in the tradition of 'E5150', 'Stonehenge'
and 'The Dark', very keyboard orientated. A
- Seventh Star - It leads into the
epic title track, which harkens back to Iommi's classic doom riffing.
Slow and grinding, yet more consummate metal. A
- Danger Zone - You can't put a
price on class this great. A desperate, dangerous slice of AOR
meets metal, with a multitude of thrilling chord changes. I'd
take this over 'Paranoid' any day. The only Ozzy that
compete with this is 'Back Street Kids' or 'Rock 'N' Roll
Doctor'. Even then this shades those. Hats off. A+
- Heart Like A Wheel - Iommi cuts
loose with some wicked soloing, with a heavy blues feel. Slow
but bruising. Iommi's work here is in a different world. B+
- Angry Heart - A good, commercial
three minute workout that chugs along nicely, the use of organ heavy
here. Firmly metal. A
- In Memory - Short at two and a
half minutes, but gets the job done, another heavy AOR ballad, with
Hughes pouring it out in the chorus. Great dramatics, you can
never get enough of those. A
