Horatio's Review:
Accept went out with a whimper when they first disbanded, 1989's 'Eat The Heat' their only album without Udo and one I would review instead if I had a full copy of the bloody thing.  David Reece and 'X.T.C.'...they could have been onto something.  Regardless 'Predator' was Accept's final album proper, appearing in 1996, following 1993's 'Objection Overruled' and 1994's 'Death Row'.  Drummer Stefan Kaufmann had retired his position at the drum stool due to a degenerative back condition and was replaced in the studio by Cartellone, who had played with the Damn Yankees.  Forced to the mighty Mayhem label, Accept roped in one time big shot producer Michael Wagner to handle production duties, with Peter Baltes assuming lead vocals on several tracks, something he hadn't done since 'Breaker'.

Anyone expecting another 'Restless And Wild' was a true fool as the days of speed and machine gun riffs were long gone, although that's not to say Accept weren't heavy, rather they had altered their sound to reflect the mid-nineties, with a bit of hard rock and downtuned metal thrown in to stay contemporary, I assume.  'Making Me Scream', 'Lay It Down', 'Crucified' and 'Run Through The Night' all make the grade in old style Accept fashion, although I have to wonder who authorized the drum machine for 'Primitive'.  Members of the band have said they were at different points musically during 'Predator' and it shows.  Obviously Udo was still into traditional metal, as proved by his solo work since.  Where Hoffmann and Baltes were at I have no clue, but given the uneven direction of this and 'Death Row' the band was wise to split.  A reasonable climax to one of metal's greatest acts and better than anything you're likely to hear from Iron Maiden these days anyway.

Song summaries include:

Hard Attack - Some dude gets ready for Udo's anal onslaught, 'in the heat of the night you've pushed my juice to the limit, you slide so right, I know that you're going down'.  Good to hear the usual overblown backing vocals that were Accept's trademark.
Crossroads - Baltes and Udo share vocals on a fairly hefty rocker as the band contemplate their different directions with confused gazes.
Making Me Scream - Downtuned to suit the drab musical climate of 1996, but heavy enough to keep the punters on the ball and avoid the sellout tag.
Diggin' In The Dirt - This is similar, more bottom-ended bursts with a ludicrous chorus with the Germans trying to sound American.  The manner in which they pronounce 'dirt' is somewhat laughable.
Lay It Down - It was a coup was it not to get Paul Dianno for guest vocals?  Wait, that's Baltes?  Uncanny similarity.  Glorious anthem with a ready made chorus for headbangers united worldwide 1985.
It Ain't Over Yet - Baltes appears to be usurping Udo's vocal position as he takes the lead again, with less than stellar results, a slow yawner with some decent guitar breaks to redeem it.
Predator - 'Sneaking up behind you, hunting in a pack, attacking out of nowhere, always from the back' sings Udo taking the role of mountain lion.  Once in a college class when I was 19 I was writing lyrics when I came up with 'hunting in packs, no one fight back, night attack, feel the crack'.  Good to see Accept used it.
Crucified - The only track with a dose of speed, but well short of the 'Restless And Wild' days.  Hoffmann rattles off a fast solo that evokes the days of 1982 for a few seconds.  Lyrically it's the usual Udo themes, life and failure, on the edge, crucified!!!!!!!!
Take Out The Crime - Udo's concerned about the USA's rampant crime rate, 'day or night- seems always alright to execute a crime'.  But Udo's rounding up the boys for some vigilante action to wipe out Fraker and his minions.  'We've got to clean up the slime, so we can live without pain, you better watch out!'  So now imagine Udo running through the war torn streets with an Uzi wasting faceless goons with his camouflaged outfit.
Don't Give A Damn - I'm not fond of Hoffmann's riffing style on 'Predator', it's weak and resembles hard rock rather than metal, with some jangly tones.  But he don't give a damn.
Run Through The Night - This is more like it, flirtation with near AOR as Accept try to rediscover the charm of 'Metal Heart'.  The Scorpion's couldn't do it this good in 1996, if anyone recalls the tripe that was 'Pure Instinct', a true bomb.
Primitive - More Baltes, as Cartellone is removed in favour of a drum machine.  I'm sure Udo wanted no part of this, furiously ranting that it's 'not metal'.  Not bad, with the great lyric 'what you gonna do when your own flesh and blood comes around and beats you up?'
