Skin Splitter's Review:
Hardcore band out of Connecticut that I had never heard of before until I went to the
Fallen Friends Benefit Tour. Upon hearing them live, I immediately went home, kicked the door in, grabbed the pennies I had saved for my tire rotation and oil change, and immediately spent them on this album.
I brought the album home and ever so gently placed the CD into the
Skin-Splitter's home system (dubbed Helen Keller Studios). Hello morning, we have once again found a hardcore CD that is not too shabby.
The added unexpected bonus of the album has to be the solos. Yep,
solos in hardcore. Very rare, but even with that, in order for this CD to work you have to remember two things.
One, don't expect to be blown away by the musical quality (it's no Cannibal
Corpse, Vai, or anything like that), it's relatively simple to play (tune guitars to "C") and the lyrics are fairly simple to understand.
Bearing that in mind, rule number two is that the CD MUST be played loud.
Some hardcore albums you can avoid this, but for the most part, this CD needs to be played loud, and I mean loud like you can't think or do anything except for be engrossed by the loud assault being pumped into your gourd.
If you can remember those two rules, then you're all set. I highly recommend
"Forsaken", "Suffer", and "Infected".
Right off you know that they don't love Jesus like some bands (Sworn
Enemy). The best part is that this one clocks in at under 30 minutes (even with the bonus song).
Song Summaries include:
Forsaken - Right out of the gate.
If you don't like this song, turn the CD player off. It's over for you.
However, in the hardcore world, this is a good song and easy to listen to and play.
Suffer - The best song on the album.
Good intro and starting lyrics. It helps if you pretend or actually do point down at someone when your yelling them.
So Alone - A typical hardcore song.
Not much of anything that will blow you away, but a good song none the less with a nice breakdown at 1:12.
Wake Up And Hate - Faster paced song but still pretty typical hardcore.
Does include a solo though at :59 that continues until 1:46.
While You Were Praying - Speaking intro from something that really signifies the hardcore movement.
At 1:58 you get a guitar sound reminiscent of Pissing Razors.
Two notes bend to hell.
Infected - A faster paced song with nice double bass and nice guitar riffs.
Another rare solo that is pretty good at 1:20, the followed up with the best breakdown on the album.
Feel free to hit walls and your sister on this one.
How Can I Regret - A talking intro that is soon replaced by some good drum work and good guitar work (for hardcore).
At 1:06, the song takes a small tempo shift, but it's still good.
Hard Luck - Not a bad sing along song, but it's relatively boring and not a lot going on here.
I think of a filler song from Megadeth. It doesn’t suck, but it just seems to be missing something...
Back Lash - Awful, typical hardcore intro.
The song tries to redeem itself but fails to really do so. At 1:58 there's an interesting part, but it's still mediocre.
Hard Surprise - A good song to end the album on.
Nice, steady beat and the lyrics are basically saying that this band isn't done making albums.
1:56 a nice breakdown of fun.
(Untitled Track) - When I first heard this song I immediately thought of one thing.
Sepultura - Chaos A.D. You'll hear it too if you really try...
Not terrible, but there is a reason it's the "bonus song".
